In Case With Grace: August 2024

I LIVE! And this month we’re rounding up two for one, as I missed our last one while engaged in a deadly battle against god! Again. We keep fighting, they really don’t want me to carry out my evil deeds for some reason.

Let’s get to it!

These last two months, I…

  • Rebooted Umqwam, with a new CSS theme, and two new lore entries!

  • Worked extensively on GUTGUN, and ran playtesting phase 1. I thoroughly playtested it, did several major revisions, and landed on a real solid platform upon which I can build the rest of the game!

  • Seriously there was a lot of GUTGUN work.

  • Wrote a long blog post about the term “GM” and alternatives to it for TTRPGs. (I am considering creating a subdomain on my website to host these long blog posts more securely than tumblr, we’ll see, though!)

  • Designed new commission sheets.

  • Made a 1 page solo journaling rpg for the One Page RPG jam and Trans Fury jam.

  • Participated in Art Fight.

  • Did a stream overlay as a commission.

For Hollowed Kingdoms. The logo on the bottom right is their own, not designed by me.

Cool Things

Zenless Zone Zero

This game has the SAUCE. It’s oozing style in every corner, from the fantastic combat, to the music, visuals, UI, and writing! It evolves on the surprisingly unique combat mechanics of Genshin Impact and creates something that really POPS. Give me the ability to parry in your combat system and I am going to kiss you on the mouth I can’t help it I love parrying so much.

Its animation is top quality, and full of life and energy that’s seldom found in a lot of games— they’re clearly utilizing the insane amounts of money printed from their past games to polish this thing to a frankly absurd degree. Even like, background props— things like bikes or boats you just find around and won’t pay attention to have ~5 wholly unique models. WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?! THAT’S SO UNNECESSARY BUT LOVELY.

It takes a y2k revival style for its aesthetic that impresses me quite a bit, as they’ve managed to even create skeumorphic UI that I actually kinda vibe with— and I typically HATE skeumorphic design! They’re reimagining y2k but without the crimes against design principles! I can actually read (most) menus and buttons! Like…minimalist skeumorphism, almost, in some areas. Crazy!

I can go on a bit forever with this but trust me this game is amazing, it’s shaping up to be a new favorite of mine for quite a while to come!

Destiny 2: The Final Shape

I’M FREE. I’M FREE! I DON’T HAVE TO CARE ABOUT DESTINY ANYMORE! I’M FREE! THE MAIN STORY’S OVER!

Look I LOVE Destiny’s lore and story, it’s a huge source of inspiration for me! So, after a literal decade of buildup— we finally got the final chapter of this long saga in the form of The Final Shape. After the disaster that was Lightfall, I wholly anticipated this to be awful, though I desperately hoped it wouldn’t be. Lo and behold, TFS ended up being arguably the best expansion in the series’ entire history! What a way to close out!

There’s some rad writing, art, game design, lore entries, character moments, etc. etc. etc. across the board here!

And then they fired a bunch of people who made it happen just a few weeks after its wildly successful launch! Wonderful! I love the video game industry! Great times there! Seriously though fuck Bungie, they promised time and time again that their acquisition wouldn’t lead to layoffs and this is mass layoff #2(?) since then. Their employees weren’t even warned, just cut. Meanwhile their CEO is collecting cars like they’re baseball cards.

I’m glad to not be locked in for the sake of the story and I absolutely do not plan to spend a single dime on their products ever again, not unless their leadership gets swapped out (doubtful).

Clickolding

Once again the mad and brilliant Xalavier Nelson Jr. has created a video game that god will hold against humanity.

You are alone in a hotel room with a distressing distressed masked man who is paying you quite well to click a tally counter while he watches.

That is the game. It’s a tense, harrowing ~1hr experience that I highly recommend. It’s a game about sharing an experience with someone you really, really do not want to, and as a result, Clickolding elicits some fascinating emotions and ideas in its short runtime.

Thankfully they have accessibility options that allow you to hold down the clicky button instead of literally having to click 1000 times. I just set my foot mouse up and held it down when needed, no trouble!

Seriously though play this game, it’s very much worth your time.

Prompt

Each month I provide a prompt to inspire you to create something in any medium you like!

This month’s prompt: When I’m gone.

Readers can share their work in the #sharing-grounds channel on my Discord server!
